Other Nitrate Interactions

Uranium contamination of groundwater is typically associated with mining, milling, nuclear testing and the disposal of spent nuclear fuel. However, the High Plains and Central Valley aquifers have some of the highest concentrations of dissolved uranium in groundwater despite lower occurrences of these activities. It’s possible that when nitrate and uranium interact nitrate makes uranium more soluble leading to secondary uranium contamination. This is worth investigating as uranium contaminated drinking water can damage bones and kidneys.
